When Your Body Speaks, Are You Listening?

In functional nutrition, we often say that symptoms are messengers - not nuisances.
In functional nutrition, we often say that symptoms are messengers - not nuisances.

Over the last several weeks, we’ve been exploring the liver—its powerful role in detoxification, hormone metabolism, and inflammation control—and the many ways we can support it through gentle, intentional habits. Our upcoming spring cleanse, Liverpalooza, was born out of that exploration, offering a seasonal opportunity to reset, renew, and realign with our health goals.

But while our focus has been on the liver, many of the symptoms we’ve discussed that are impacted by liver dysfunction—like fatigue, brain fog, stubborn weight gain, bloating, and mood swings—often point to deeper gut-body imbalances that ripple across multiple systems. This makes sense when we remember that the gut and liver are inextricably connected. With the liver’s integral role in digestion, what affects one nearly always affects the other. So, when we notice persistent symptoms, it’s often our body’s way of signaling that something upstream or downstream isn’t flowing smoothly.

Let’s revisit some of those common complaints:

·       Chronic fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest

·       Digestive discomfort like bloating, nausea, or constipation

·       Skin issues such as acne, eczema, or dull complexion

·       Hormonal imbalances—irregular cycles, PMS, or hot flashes

·       Stubborn weight gain, especially around the middle

·       Brain fog, irritability, or mood swings

Whether the root lies in the gut, the liver, or both, these signals are worth our attention. They reflect the body’s cumulative burden—from poor sleep and chronic stress to ultra-processed foods, environmental toxins, and irregular eating habits. This is the burden bucket we often refer to in Liverpalooza (and in my general practice).

In functional nutrition, we regularly say that symptoms are messengers—not nuisances. They serve as clues to alert us that something is amiss in one or more of our body systems. When we suppress or ignore them, we miss an opportunity to listen to what the body truly needs.

And for many of us, especially those navigating midlife, what the body is craving is rest—not just from stress, but from food.

In the coming weeks, we’ll explore how creating space between meals and building a gentle, sustainable fasting lifestyle can give the gut and liver time to recover, recalibrate, and re-energize. Did you know that digestion is the biggest stress on the body? It’s true! Every time we eat, our digestive system shifts into gear—diverting blood flow, activating enzymes, and requiring a massive amount of energy and coordination across multiple systems. While eating is essential, constantly snacking or eating from morning until bedtime gives the body no downtime to focus on repair, detoxification, or hormonal recalibration. Fasting isn’t about deprivation or discipline—it’s about restoring rhythm in a world that constantly asks us to do more, eat more, and push harder.

For now, let this be your gentle nudge to start paying closer attention. Are there symptoms you’ve brushed off as “normal?” Are you eating often from waking until the bedtime? Could your body be asking for a little more breathing room?

Next week, we’ll dive into the science and strategy behind meal timing and metabolic rest—so you can start tuning in, slowing down, and letting your body do what it’s designed to do: heal. Until then, here’s to the wisdom of your symptoms—and to the space that allows them to shift.
